Today we drove to Agra, the home of the Taj Mahal. On the way Inder stopped at the side of the road, lit a handful of incense sticks and started waving them around. We nearly choked but he got out and stuck them in the ground and said a prayer. We thought he may be praying to his Angels he had previously told us about, we were also a little worried he might be praying that the car would get us there. Thankfully it did.
We arrived in Agra and it lived up to its reputation of being a dump, the only reason people come here is for the Taj. When we arrived we paid our 750 rupees, Indians only have to pay 20 but we did get to jump the queue. It was so busy and everyone was fighting to get the prime photo position. Luckily Pete is taller than most Indians so he didn't have a problem with this. The Taj Mahal was an amazing sight, the white marble carved to produce a fairy tale temple with a huge white dome on top and four huge towers on each corner pointing to the sky.
We made our way to the door after putting our shoe covers over our flip flops. There is one tiny door at the front with another a couple of metres inside. You can imagine what thousands of Indians would look like trying to get through your front door. This wasn't much different, they are not very patient people. There wasn't much inside other than a couple of tombs and some ornate carvings in the marble walls. We made our way out and headed to our hotel. Once checked in we headed up to the rooftop which, in the brochure, is said to have a view of the Taj. This must have been written before the huge trees grew, needless to say the Taj was not in sight. We had a beautiful meal which was prepared in the house below the hotel, this was real Indian home cooking and it was very tasty.
