We left LA about 8am for the drive to Carlsbad where Legoland is. It is not far out of San Diego & took just under 2hrs to get there. There is a Legoland Hotel right next to the park so we had a look in their lobby before going into the park.
Legoland is definitely aimed at kids so the rides were mostly pretty tame. We only went on a couple.
There are figures made of Lego everywhere & everything is brightly coloured. Because it is still the Christmas period, the 'Holiday' theme was very prominent. There was an enormous Lego Christmas tree & even the decorations were Lego. We finally managed to get a photo with Santa after 4 weeks of trying!
The best part of the park in my opinion was the Mini Cities. There were replicas of New York complete with a Statue of Liberty, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Las Vegas & Washington DC. Everything was made of Lego. The detail was quite incredible. Everything was easily recognisable, even the Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans where we had beignets last year. There were cars & trucks moving around the roads, the volcano at The Mirage in Las Vegas erupted every so often & you could push buttons to make the band play in the Hollywood Bowl. There were skaters skating around the rink at Rockefeller Square & kids riding scooters in Central Park. There was a parade of marching figures outside the Capital Building & Rockettes on top of Radio City Hall. Some of the cities were built around the lake so there were also water activities - rowers, sail boats & paddlesteamers around New Orleans. It really was amazing. There was so much to see that I'm sure I have missed things. Because of the festive season there were lots of Lego Santas throughout the cities.
We went on a cruise ride around the lake where there were other Lego creations such as the Sydney Opera House, Taj Mahal & Eiffel Tower. Each creation took thousands of
Lego bricks to make.
The biggest thing we saw was a massive fighter plane thing from Star Wars. It took over 20million bricks to make & took 32 people 3months to build it.
One of the rides we went on was a water ride. We sat in pirate boats that followed a track through the water. On the front & back were water guns that we could use to fire water at people in other boats. What I didn't know until too late was that there were the same water guns around the outside & people watching could fire water at the boats. We got a soaking. Luckily it was a warm day - mid 20s - and there was also the human dryer that we stood in for a while.
Being a theme park there were sideshow games too. I can't resist those & played one were I had to throw 2 balls in a garbage bin mounted on the wall & make the balls stay in there. I did it & won a big purple minion. There was no way I could bring a minion home so I carried it around for a while until a lady commented how cute it was. She was obviously a minion lover so the minion went home with her. Her kid was very excited.
As we were making our way back to the entrance this afternoon we came across an area with busts on plinths. They were all made of Lego & included George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, the Queen, Elvis & Marilyn. Very very clever.
On the way back tonight we stopped at the Beverley Centre. Unfortunately Macy's didn't have the suit I have been trying to get. I hope I get the chance to try one more store before we go.
Tomorrow we go to the House of Mouse.
