We have had a wonderful day visiting Lago Argentina on our way to Perito Moreno Glacier.
About one hour by mini bus from El Calafate and we entered the national park - 100 Pesos each covered in the tour. Photo stops by the lake a couple of times before we get our first glimpse of the glacier.
We board one of many boats for the one hour cruise (70 Pesos each) up to the edge of the glacier. It is very windy but not really that cold and it was trying to rain. Strangely this part of Patagonia only receives about 400mm of rain per year which puts it almost in to the desert category. The steppes provide a magnificent backdrop to the lake and the glacier. We stood out on the open upper deck and the camera was getting a workout. The glacier is a truly beautiful sight to see. But the best was yet to come.
Back on to the bus for 10 minutes to the main viewing areas from which many trails lead both north and south with views from above the glacier and also looking up to it. As the boat had already given us a good view of the southern side we elected to walk the northern trails. Steel platforms weave their way giving beautiful views of the face. Occasionally chunks of ice will break free and crash into the lake. We saw some small falls. We hung around for a long time in one particular place hoping to see a really big splash. We could hear chunks crashing in the distance but by the time the sound reached us all we could see was the ice floating. On the northern face there were more icebergs and some of the bigger ones were themselves breaking apart and floating in all directions. The ice flow colors of deep blue mixed with dazzling white kept the camera clicking. 220 photos today.
Today's blog photo is taken looking at the north face from the observation platforms. It was very hard to pick a photo for the day. The extra photo under the"photos tab" is of both of us with the glacier as a backdrop. Breathtaking!
It has been a wonderful day once more. Tomorrow we have an early start of 7am visiting Upsala Glacier and into the high Andes. We won't return until about 8.30 pm.
From 50 degrees South Latitude in the Patagonian region of Argentine it's goodnight.
