This morning I went for my walk, a little later than normal, harassed by the street sellers, trying to sell sunglasses and clip ons but it was ok, another attempted to sell me a ric shaw ride , which I attempted to point out would defeat the purpose of taking a walk, lol. This gentleman did stop all the motorcycle s so I could cross the main road so was so helpful, I then walked through the parklands and about 500m up the road he was waiting, offers of a short trip to take in the tourist sites, seemed disappointed when I again pointed out that it was against the health benefits to take a lift,(and I would of had to of paid him..). Stopped off at my local convience store which is a narrow long building, jam packed with just about anything you will need, down the end of the shop, your sense of smell is almost sensory overdrive, purchased our bottled water for the day, returned home, in time for another sensory explosion in the breakfast area of the Grand hotel, then downstairs to be picked up at 8 am to travel to the Phuoc Tuy province, leaving Ho Chi Minh by motorway tunnel under the river, passing through at least 4 toll booths along the way , approx half distance to our first destination of Ba Ria, we departed the motorway, the road was still 2-3 lanes each way, but it was back to avoiding crazy locals on their motorised bikes, the roads lined with building housing locals work building anything from marble carvings to motorcycle repairs , cafes to feed the locals, and anything in between for miles and miles, we then arrived at the local Ba Ria shopping mall, to pick up our guide Chon, ( known as John). ( our driver spoke no English), we drove to our first stop , a visit to Vietnamese underground tunnels, which demonstrated how the other half survived during the Vietnam war, these tunnels apparently came within 1 1/2 miles of the Nui Dat base, they were tight little confines, more suited to the tapioca diet than the KFC diet apparently. Then off to the remains of Nui Dat base as you can see in the then and now photos, much has changed, but there are still remains there. We then drove around SAS hill, to the team sons of Luscombe airfield, which now is a decaying tar seal 2 km stretch of road, ( but does have a convience store selling memorabilia and 333 beer of all things). So a couple of beers to quench our thirst and on to the Long Tân memorial, the only foreign memorial in Việteam, commemorating the lose of Australian, NZ and Vietnamese lives lost in this battlefield. Back to the outskirts of Ba Ria, where there was impressive feast layed on for us, then back to the Ba Ria shopping mall, where Sharmaine, couldn't resist another 4 pairs of shoes, and we left our guide, then back to the city it was quite a bit slower as there was the extreme rain which you get in the monsoon season, all the other went off for a nana nap, I had a blog to complete, time for sleeping later, then a coffee and a Uber to the night markets, as it was still raining, by the time we got there it had stopped, a few laps to check out what the locals had to sell , and plenty of attempted sales, we also had this young fella Tom , who caked us Aussie aussie, to which the reply was nah, he responded with Kia Ora, he followed us around trying to sell caps, , his sister then sold Kech some trousers, time to walk home only about a km and take in how the locals survive,
