In September/October 2006 I spent around a month working in Cape Town. Cape Town is very touristy compared to the rest of the regions of the country I had worked in.
I went to work in Cape Town to establish a new sports project. I was living in Nelly's lodge which is in the Observatory area of Cape Town and where our volunteers are based as well as a lot of international students.
Living in the lodge was amazing as there was a lot of different people to interact with and there was always something going on.
In terms of work I was very lucky to find a good school within walking distance of the lodge. The school were very keen for us to work with them and I started to program up by coaching football and hockey at the school full time.
It was good fun coaching at the school although sometimes the kids could be quite hard to work with as they came from very bad backgrounds such as the Cape Town townships where violence and hard times were common. All the boys wanted to do was play football and they were not keen on playing rugby or hockey. The girls at the school were very keen on playing sports and they loved getting involved with football at any opportunity.
I also set up the opportunities for our volunteers to play hockey, football and cricket for local clubs as well. I also went training with a local team Salt River FC which was a good laugh and quite different culturally as they were all Black, coloured and Muslim so I would often get referred to as 'white boy' but still all good fun.
In terms of tourist attractions Cape Town has a lot to offer and I made sure I made the most of it. Highlights include climbing table mountain which was great apart from my huge hangover at the time, going to Robben Island, going to the various beaches around Cape Town, having dinner at the waterfront and watching the table cloth slide down the mountain, experiencing Cape Towns nightlife which was pretty good and being able to walk around the city centre without being mugged or killed which is actually the only major city in South Africa you can actually walk around fairly safely.
When I had to leave Cape Town to go to work in Knysna it was the first time I had ever been sad to leave anywhere because of the people I had meet. I never ever get sad or emotional when leaving somewhere, simply because I am so using to moving around all the time and also its just who I am. Cape Town overall is a beautiful city, so definitely recommend going there but also try and get out of there as well to see the rest of the country as it is beautiful.
