Whilst working in Cape Town I decided on spending a long weekend in Namibia. Where I was living in Cape Town Observatory in Nelly's Lodge there was lots of other long term students or people working their like myself so I found a few people to go with a Dutch guy, 2 Swedish girls and a German girl.
On Friday morning at 7am we set off from Cape Town in the Dutch guys car and headed for the border of Namibia. We all took it in turns to drive heading up towards the border and we stopped at various points along the way. The scenery on the way towards Namibia was quite interesting and changed as we got further north from lush green farms to more desert and rocky mountains the further north we got. The scenery was quite different from things I had seen before, it was similar to Tunisia in some ways and also the Grand Canyon but different in many ways as well.
When we got to the border we had the normal crossing formalities and the border crossing was nice and simple compared to other border crossings I had in Africa which was a relief. After crossing the border we headed for Ais-Ais which would be our stopping point for the night. We arrived at the campsite at around 6pm 11 hours after we had started off. The next day a Saturday we headed off to the Fish River Canyon which is the second largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon in the states. The scenery was stunning very rocky and hilly. When we got to the canyon the view was quite spectacular, not as good as the grand canyon but still impressive in its own right. After seeing the canyon we headed back to the campsite.
The next day we headed back to Cape Town again taking around 11 hours. Overall I was very impressed with what I saw of Namibia. I would of liked to seen more of the country but the small bit I saw I really liked. I would have to put Namibia in my top 4 African countries along with Ghana, South Africa and Tanzania.
