India and Nepal 2022
One of the unique features of life here in Myanmar is the use of thanaka on the face. It is a yellowy white paste which is applied mainly to cheek areas.
While it is normally associated with women, there are many men and children who use it too.
It is made from the bark of the thanaka tree, which is grown in Magway, Sagaing, Mandalay divisions and Shan state. It is a natural product which is excellent for cooling the skin and serving as a sunblock. This week's temperatures are over 100/38 every day and so it is particularly noticeable in this hot dry season. Myanmar women have beautiful skin texture. One other tradition is less beneficial. In fact chewing betel nut is a real health hazard. It is an addictive substance which is widely used my men. Taxi drivers use it as a stimulant to keep going throughout the day or night. Teeth are stained a reddy orange colour and decay. Mouth cancers are common. So two traditions of Myanmar - one to keep and one to discard?
