Although we went out hunting lights last night, we sadly drew a blank. We saw a couple of hazy blobs, which our guide told us were the lights but they were masked by cloud. C'est la vie!
The weather was back to being pants today but nevertheless we geared up to go on the golden circle tour. Today we saw the church at Skalholt which is the most important Christian sights in iceland, followed by the incredible Gullfoss (golden falls), the most amazing waterfall I've ever seen (pic doesn't do it justice!). Then we went on to Geysir (which gives its name to all blow holes like it in the world). The original is no longer active but we saw Strokkur, which shots boiling water and steam 100 foot in the air, once every 5 mins or so. The smell reminded us of Rotorua in New Zealand, a similar sulphurous eggy stench, but cool nonetheless. We went onward to our final stop which was Thingvellir national park, a unesco world heritage sight and an extremely important historical and geological sight. It was here in 930AD that the first ever democratic parliament in Iceland met. It is also the sight where the American and European/Eurasian geological plates are pulling gradually apart creating a visible rift valley.
A pretty long but interesting day, packing a lot in! Off for some tea now and an early night before a very early start tomorrow.
