Today we had an early start as we headed up the coast towards Volivoli. On the way we drove through Suva which is the largest city in the south pacific and was a real change of pace from what we've been used to! We then stopped off at Nasaudori for some lunch supplies (incidentally where our guide Dave was from). After this we headed to a small village called Nasautoka. We had previously been briefed on protocol in these more traditional and rural villages which basically meant Howellsey had to wear a skirt!! Well, a sulu which is what the Fijians call a sarong and we made sure our shoulders were covered too. We were invited to take part in a traditional welcoming ceremony which includes drinking Kava which is made from the powdered root of a pepper tree mixed with water. It looks and tastes like muddy water but the Fijians love it! Maybe this is down to its narcotic properties! This doesn't have much of an effect in small quantities except a bit of a furry and numb tongue but at the rate the Fijians drink it no wonder they're all so chilled out all the time!! After the ceremony we went rafting on the nearby river on a bilibili which is a traditional bambo raft still used in many villages to transport stuff down stream. Then it was back to the village where Howellsey took part in a little rugby with the local kids (cute!) followed by more Kava and singing and dancing. Yes you heard me right - Ian had to dance, and with an elderly Fijian matron! After more Kava we closed the ceremony and headed off to Volivoli. This is the northern most tip of Viti Levu (the main island). The resort is lovely and we're looking forward to a couple of really chilled days here. the village trip was really a highlight and certainly makes you appreciate how easy we have life. The Feejee experience work together with the local villages on all their activities ensuring that a large percentage of profits go to community projects and the general upkeep of the areas we visit. So it's nice to know we're travelling with a company with a conscience and desire to give us the real Fiji as well as giving back to the communities.
