After arriving in Saigon yesterday we had a quick walk around our block in Bui Vien street. This is the backpacker tourist area so lots of restaurants and westerners. They also warn about pickpockets and bag snatchers here so we are being a bit more cautious here then other places we have been.
We had dinner and then went and sat at one of the other bars on street and just watched the people and had a few beers. Was really interesting just watching everything going on here in such a busy street.
Our day today started with grabbing a taxi to the War Remnants museum.
This was an amazing place filled with so many horrific photos of the damage the American war did to these people. The damage that Agent orange did then and still now is depicted in so many photos . Unbelievable the birth defects that it has caused and so very sad .
The defoliants that were used decimated the Vietnamese landscape for many years and it's only been in recent years that many places are starting to grow plants again . The chemicals though are soaked into the land and waterways that the people rely on . Was quite emotional walking through here and seeing the atrocities caused and really what for . I still don't understand what the U.S. were achieving. Just crazy . They used 10 times as much artillery in Vietnam than what they used in WW2.
Anyway a very memorable visit.
After that experience we visited the Ho Chi Minh City Museum followed by the Reunification Palace.
It was at the palace that 2 tanks stormed through the gates that signalled the end of the war with the Fall of Saigon to the NVA.
A really interesting day from the perspective of learning more about the war torn history of this country.
We just got back to our hotel just in time before a massive storm hit. Good snoozing weather.
Tonight we found a bar that shows movies in a mini cinema so we had dinner while watching a movie which was different . We are going to try and get back there again before we leave.
