On Saturday the 4th of July we followed Julian and his family out to Kata Tjuta, (The Olgas). The Olgas are a group of large domed rock formations and like Ayres Rock are found within the Uluru / Kata Tjuta National Park. The 36 domes that make up Kata Tjuta / The Olgas cover an area of 21.68 km2. They are composed of conglomerate, a sedimentary rock consisting of cobbles and boulders of varying rock types including granite and basalt, cemented by a matrix of sandstone. The highest point, Mount Olga, is 1,066 meters above sea level, or approximately 546 meters above the surrounding plain 198 meters higher than Uluru / Ayres Rock.
Once organised from the car park we began a 1 km walk into the first lookout, the walk is called "the valley of the winds". This was a little bit of a struggle for Charlie. From the lookout there was another 1.6 km to the second lookout. I decided to head back to the car with Charlie and everyone else kept going. On their return Mandy said the view of the Olgas from the second lookout was worth the walk. Everyone else agreed and seemed glad they had made the trek there and back. That afternoon / evening we chilled out at the camp site as everyone was very tired. The following day we planned to have a relaxing day and in the evening go out to Ayres Rock to watch the sun go down.
