We spent another three great days in Darwin exploring the area and spending more time at both the Leanyer and Palmerston water parks. We took the opportunity to spend time with Alex & Jami each evening after they returned home from work, which was really great. We really enjoyed and appreciated their hospitality. On Thursday the 25th of June we sadly left Darwin and headed south to the Litchfield National Park. We were either going to do Kakadu or Litchfield, but didn't have time to do both. Many people on the road we met were saying Kakadu (Kaka don't) for various reasons. Amongst those reasons were the $25 per person entry fee and the fact that you really have to go into Kakadu to see it. The best areas you want to see aren't easily accessible which means leaving the caravan somewhere. Also many walks were too advanced for the kids. So I think we made a wise decision opting to head to a camp area in the Litchfield National Park called Wangi Falls. Litchfield National Park covers approximately 1500 square kilometres and has a long history of importance to the aboriginal people of the area. It features numerous stunning waterfalls that cascade down from its sandstone table top range. Wangi Falls camp is at the west end of the park 60 km from the closest town Bachelor. We thought Wangi Falls camp ground wasn't a patch on Edith falls campground, but the picnic area around the falls was superb. We spent the afternoon swimming in the water hole at the bottom of the falls.
The following day we headed up the road to another area in the park called Florence Falls. This was a terrific little spot, again very crowded with tourists. To get to the rock pool at the bottom you have to negotiate 136 steps and a little bit of a walk, but it is worth it. As you make your way down the pool the forest gets dense and moist, ferns appear and it feels like you are in the tropics. We loved this. The pool at the bottom is not as large as Wangi Falls but it is very pretty. The waterfalls dropping down into the pool are very spectacular. You can spend hours here. We spent the afternoon back at Wangi Falls swimming, having fun and staying cool. We plan on heading off tomorrow and getting down to Mataranka for a day or two.
