We arrived in Darwin on Friday 19th of June after leaving Edith Falls. It was probably the worst weekend to come to Darwin as the as V8 Super Cars are on and it is the beginning of the school holidays. Accommodation is not only expensive here but it is all booked out. Luckily for us and many thanks to Vic and Trish from the Olive and Lavender Coffee shop in Avoca, we are able to stay at Vic's son's house just south of Darwin. Vic's son Alex is a great bloke and his partner Jami is lovely. We set up camp next to their house and had a nice quiet evening. Today we headed into Darwin for a look around. Alex and Jami had gone off to Kakadu for a romantic weekend. First off, we went into the city, which is more like Ballarat than a city, and checked out the tourist information centre, town beach, jetty and mall areas. It's a very pretty city and there is lots of development happening here.
Darwin is famous for The Bombing of Darwin during World War 2 on the 19th of February 1942, and for Cyclone Tracey on Christmas Eve 1974. We were keen to get into the history of the area but hot weather had us thinking about cooling down instead. So we thought the museum can wait and after lunch at the city water front beach we headed to the Palmerston Water Park. This is a free water park and it is amazing. The water slide is about four stories high and takes your breath away. It was fun racing the kids down the slides. We spent several enjoyable hours here before heading back to Alex & Jami's for the evening.
