Today we left caravan in the caravan park and headed west 110km (60km) of dirt. We arrived at the Dinosaur Stampede National Monument at Lake Quarry Conservation Park. Here 95 million years ago a heard of small legged dinosaurs and two larger dinosaurs came to drink on the edge of what was then a lake. Over 3300 dinosaur footprints have been discovered under several meters of rock that has been carefully removed. A large building has been built over the site to preserve the footprints. We did a tour and learnt all about the dinosaur stampede that occurred and how the footprints were left and preserved.
After lunch we headed back to Winton, the kids were keen to hit the pool, only 30 degrees today.
In the afternoon we headed down to the Gregory North Hotel for the famous chicken races in the beer garden. This is very funny and good fun. Basically the eight racing chickens are all different colours. The chickens are each actioned off to the crowd. Then they do 4 laps of a small circuit chasing a remote control car that is carrying a load of food. The first chicken to cross the line is the winner. The winnings are shared by the lucky owner (who doesn't keep the chicken) and the hotel. All proceeds go to charity. The kids paid $30 with a couple sitting next to us for a chicken. Unfortunately it wasn't the winner.
