Back in town again for the last two days. Think we are about to go for dinner so let me be brief. Yesterday we cycled in an Ecological Reserve for an hour. Today we went to the craziest market ever in San Telmo, it had all manner of weirdos at it dressed up (weird in a good way), and selling everything imaginable. Live music, live food... madness all around, and it seems to have spread all down a main street for a mile since this morning. We also booked our boat to Uruguay for Wednesday... time for food now, more detail later maybe, if I am not too lazy
Ok, so I have now eaten dinner, and slept, and had breakfast again... and there is a little bit more to tell now
On Saturday, we had planned on going to the Ecologica Park for a cycle around, so I decided I would jog down and see what it was like before hand. Unfortuntaley for me it was closed, so I just went for a run around the place, down the Marina area (which was nice), and then was heading towards Palermo but got lost and ended up in some slums. The buildings were really colourful, and Im sure the people were too, but I high tailed it out of there and made my way back home... about nine and a half miles if you are interested... took an hour. Its strange here, even though the sun is beating down, in the shade it is quite cool. Also at night the breeze picks up and its almost cold. Anyway, got back and had breakfast, and we went down to the park to get our bikes and cycle around. We went to a fella renting bikes beside the park, dodgy looking chaps, but they didnt need our passports or a deposit... since he gave us the worst bikes ever... even if Regina loved hers. Admittadly they did the job. The park itself was built out in the wetlands, there is a 5 mile loop, with a few smaller loops mixed in around them. On the outter reaches of the loop you can see out to sea, or rather out on the delta. The water is dead calm and you can see all the way to the horizon, just flat water, quite cool looking. Weirdly we saw no animals in the park, which I thought was the whole idea, but it was a nice little cycle all the same. After an hour we had cycled two of the loops nice and slowly and our bums were sore so we headed off walking around the marina area. There was a 10k race on that evening so we were looking out for bits of the course, we saw what might have been the finish line, and we saw lots of people wearing the race tshirt, no bib numbers, just tshirts. Later we found out that 15000 people ran it, all wearing the same tshirt!!!! As I may have mentioned at some stage, Regina's bag was broken (the belt buckle thing from the hip broke). We had visited a few outdoor stores and they told us to try one out the ways a bit. Since we only had enough change for one of us to go out, I headed off for a 13 stop trip that took me 2 hours and 20 euro to buy a man bag to cut the buckles off and I will have to stitch them on to the bag.... not ideal but better than the improvised solution in place now... a knot!
That evening, we arranged to meet Mags and her sister (just flown out), and they brought a norwegian couple with them. We went to Desnivel (best steak in BA), we all had steak, it was the best steak in BA. (I am getting a terrible sense of dejavu right now for typing all this, anyway sure how bad). After dinner we went to a Resistance bar for a few drinks, happy hour was from 7 to 11... two cocktails for the price of one, in other words enough vodka to kill me for 4euro... thankfully I didnt have any!!!! The pub itself was nice, some cool artwork on the walls (particularly the massive sun painting in the entrance), and they were playing BB King... to my liking along I think. We had good chats and lots of laughs and headed off home for bed
Sunday morning, yesterday to me and you for now, we got up to go the market. The famous San Telmo market. It is in the main square where we had had lunch, two blocks away. We were expecting the usual things for sale, plus we knew there would be antiques, however there was also lots of stalls with people dressed up. The photos may explain better. They had really elaborate costumes on, and passers by could get their photos taken with them, we thought it was a scam so just took photos of them. Lots of music being played in the square also, a couple of tango bands, and two guys with spanish guitars were the highlight for me. On one side street there was a mini orchestra band, they had about six accordians at the front (not sure how to spell that), then a few violins and guitars, and some drums. They were playing really classy tango music, ba bum bum bum kinda stuff.... it was deadly, ten out of ten. I had filled my camera with photos already and one video so I did't have room, but I will probably remember it always anyway, so il learn how to reproduce it when I get home (this is how I have learned to reproduce it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0Tu4KTWptM&feature=related). After the market, we got some food and came back to the hostel for a siesta (much needed, as I had gone running the ecological park that morning doing a fartlek session). Our plan is to go to Uruguay on Wednesday so we went down to the docks to book our tickets, that took a while, we got kind of lost a bit. Eventually we found the place and they all spoke English in there, excellent, tickets booked, not too pricey either (cant remember exactly now). We head down the street for dinner, and the market is still going, with lots of brazillian drum bands playing.... one of them marches off down the street with loads of dancers in tow. When we finish eating, we head towards town to meet the lads. Just down the street there is another drum band playing.... very rap video style stuff, and again there is loads of people gathered around and dancing. The sound was deafening but amazing, there was probably 12 of them with different types of drums and a real samba beat that would have fit in well at Carnival, we stood and watched them til they passed the hat around and then bolted....
Thats all the interesting stuff for last night, and I think I have finally caught up with myself. I hope this doesnt last, although at least I cant forget anything else now. I may have repeated whole days with this one, but I really cant be bothered reading it back, there are too many mistakes in my grammar for something like that. In the next episode we are going to see the Kilkenny Bar... that should be good eh!!!! Til next time, xoxo
Regina - I guess I should have some input on Buenos Aires, well the best thing has to be the food, its savage, I have definately put on a stone in Argentina!! The people here are nice too with a few cranky ones thrown in who get annoying we cant speak spanish which is one of the bad things, its quite hard to manage without spanish here and we both really wish we had learned a bit before we arrived, bit late now though eh! As im sure everyone wants to know, the clothes here are lovely, the girls are very fashionable and it would be a great place to go shopping if we had money. The city itself is lovely and all the different areas of the city are so different, I would have to say my favourite part of the city is palermo, its got lots of lovely parks and its quite a rich area so its very pretty. There is however alot of poverty here, I think you see alot more here than you see in Rio, theres lots of rubbish all over the streets at night and people going through them, theres also soo many homeless people everywhere which is sad to see. On every street you have kids juggling, singing or dancing to make some money...Anyways off to Uruguay for a few days so we´shall update you on that
