Quick note on yesterday, our last day in Buenos Aires... We were pretty tired after the trip to Uruguay, and all the walking around BA, so we didn't really fancy a tough day. Unfortunately it was very hot, even at half seven, and I wanted to go for a run around the rose garden, which has a one mile bike track loop, that lots of runners use in BA. Went down, without any breakfast or water as usual, and it was very hot, so I was tired when I came back.... tough luck for me, because someone wanted to go to the Rose garden... ok I didnt mind but I didnt let on at the time just to be difficult
We walked down anyway, at the height of noon as usual when its hottest. The garden was pretty amazing. I read somewhere that there are over a million flowers in there, and lots of species of rose (someone can google it and leave a comment to be more precise). The colours are sooooo vivid, as can be seen in the cover shot of this album, the photos I have taken just dont do the size of the place, which is award winning of course, any justice. It fits inside the 1 mile loop, so it is quite big as you can imagine. There are lots of different arrangement type things (not sure what they are called, veranda type things). And I still feel a bit wowed by the colours of the flowers (again, I didnt let on at the time, sorry). Hopefully the close up photos might give an idea, just multiply it by a million or so for the full effect (visitors to the rose garden in kilkenny castle need never return there as it is now officially just a compost heap compared to this).
After the park, we wandered back home, and took a detour to the South American Automotive something something something trade show.... we stuck our heads in, thought it looked crap and might have to pay so we left. The rest of the day was spent chilling out around the hostel (and fixing my usb key).
The last piece of my story is a bit of a recommendation for anyone who is interested.... Since getting to South America four weeks ago (would ya believe it), we have gone to restaurants for dinner most days, and most days it has been extremely good food, cheap prices and great friendly service... Desnivel in San Telmo, The place in Puerto Iguazu that I cant remember the name of... all of them good eating. The place we went to on this night however was the topper of them all, let me explain why. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated, it is on the corner of the street and has large windows angled around the corner to let a lot of light in. The waitor was extremely friendly (not fake either), and sat us down with a big smile. Later the sun shone in on Regina and he and the other waiter came over and moved everything for us with a big laugh and smile about it. It feels like is a family restaurant, a family that is extemely proud (as South Americans are) of being in the restaurant trade. We get some lovely bread before our meal, home made and still warm. Our waiter also helps us with the translations and is very helpful and understanding (as most have been admittadly). The food was lovely (as again admittadly everywhere has been). The price was extremely good (as again and again everywhere is), but at the end of the meal, the waiter came over with a tray of home made pastries and with his hand on his heart he place them on the table (With his other hand of course) and said it was with his compliments and bowed away. After we finished he came and gave us some soda water to wash it all down. The reason I recommend this particular place over all the other good foods and good prices, was the way we were made feel like being a tourist was a special thing for them, it was almost worthy of a hug before we left. After the bad day we had in the Subway, and our tired and worn out feelings towards the city in general, this restaurant clicked the whole city into place for me. The people, the culture, the food, the life of the city was summed up in this restaurant. The name of the place is Oporto and it is on Rua Paraguay in the Palermo area.... its my top tip for Buenos Aires... the city not of places to see or things to do, but people to meet and things to experience...... Thats it for Argentina... Off to Peru at half three in the morning..... if you are reading this and would like to know did we make it..... we did!
