Colleen & Tom's Explorations
So this morning we had a leisurely start - working to our own time today, which was nice. We had our cooked brekky down in the Horizon Club room and then set out for Atherton, heading south and then west, climbing up the mountains to the tablelands. It was really scenic. Our first stop was The Peanut Place at Tolga, where we bought all different flavoured peanuts, some hot peanuts and some Bundaberg ginger beer to wash it down. After that we turned south and called in to the Tolga Woodworks & Gallery Cafe, which had a lovely collection of woodworking pieces, and other artistic items, although none was bought by us. We then ventured east again to the Shaylee Strawberry Farm where we bought some refreshing mango sorbet (it was a terribly hot day) and strawberry jam to take home. People were still out in the fields, picking strawberries, but the only ones for sale were in really large quantities. After that we continued on to the Gallo Dairyland, where we had lunch. My chicken and mushroom crepe was very nice, although I may have enjoyed it more if I'd actually ordered it. I think I would have preferred the chicken and asparagus crepe I'd asked for, but what can you do? Tom had a huge hamburger. The cheese maker had finished work for the day, and was washing out his vats so nothing to see here. We then headed further south to the Malanda Dairy Centre, which was closed, and the Tarzali Lakes Smokehouse Cafe which sounded so good, promising smoked foods, and platypus sightings, but alas, it was also closed. We then turned east and visited a crater lake, Lake Barrine, which has been a tourist attraction and run by the same family since the 1920s. Tom went off to check out some ancient and tall Kauri pines, and I stayed with the car, fending off the attempted carjacking by some random bird that appeared out of the scrub. After that we headed back to Cairns, arriving back in time to freshen up and head up to The Horizon Club for some champers and food. Very nice indeed.
