Colleen & Tom's Explorations
Well - another extraordinary day!!! We were well organised and down on the pier first for our boat ride (how novel!!) over to Capri (pronounced Carpri) - it took 45 mins and was very windy and cold, so I ensured that I purchased a scarf for the return trip. Our guide, Aldo, was very good - spoke excellent English and answered questions before they were asked!! We had a little minibus on arrival that took us to Anacapri - the top of the hill/mountain. Up there we had a guided tour of a doctor's house and garden that had been built next to a Roman ruin - as he uncovered Roman artifacts he built them into his home. We then did some shopping before getting a little bus to take us to Capri where we had lunch at La Pigna "The Pine Cone"- a little restaurant built around some pine trees. We hadn't been able to catch the cable car to the top of Anacapri because it was too windy.
After lunch Aldo took us on a walking tour of Capri and along to the Augustus Caesar gardens, which were beautiful. I was in desperate need of a comfort stop and was assured there'd be facilities at the gardens. When we arrived there the police told us they were closed. We were surprised and disappointed so we sat and looked at the wonderful view while waiting for the discomfort to ease. As we sat, a couple of men came along to the toilets with a flat white package. they all then re-emerged carrying a dead body in body bag!! A German tourist had had a heart attack and died in the men's toilets!! I was relieved greatly because I was then able to go to the toilet. We had to meet Aldo at 2.50pm so we had plenty of time to look around.
The views were lovely and the shops were exclusive shops and souvenir shops. The souvenirs here, and in Naples/Pompeii, are not very good. We bought a t-shirt and a jumper for me, a bracelet for Jess (and 1 for Courtney for her birthday) made of volcanic rock from Vesuvius, and some coral, and a polar fleece jacket for Tom. There is nothing nice at a good price for the girls. Aldo had our funicular tickets to get back down to the port at Capri - it was like the Scenic Railway at Katoomba and the ski tube at Perisher combined. After having a little look at their souvenir shops we hopped back on our jet-foil for the return trip to Naples.
We had trouble docking again because the tide was out and the gangway for the ferry/jetfoil was too steep, so we had to motor around to a shorter wharf.
Back in out cabin we finally drank our champagne (which we'd asked Rowena to chill) and had received an invitation to have cocktails with the Captain tomorrow evening. After dinner we went up on deck, all rugged up, only to find out at midnight that we were not to be leaving Naples as scheduled because the 30 knot winds made it too difficult for 2 tugs to manouvre our ship out of the harbour without the danger of damaging any other craft.
