2nd day on the beautiful island of Koh Samui and our movement is restricted by sunburnt legs of the highest order. Dangling your pegs over the side of a boat for an hour long journey in 35 degree heat without applying sun cream is really f***ing stupid! Talking of restricted movements, Thai curries keep other things moving along with a bit too much momentum...
The 10 hour coach journey from Bangkok was marred by an overbearing stench of urine coming from the overflowing toilet. I have never had a more enjoyable piss than when we finally stopped off at the services on route. Teresa was not as impressed with the hole in the floor facilities as I was, still a lot better than stepping into the inch of wee on the floor of the coach's bog. The driver was lucky to have a locked door separating him from the passengers otherwise Teresa would have ironed him out.
We are currently holed up in a nice little apartment in Lamai. The air conditioner works, if not a little too well. The one and only setting is like a Siberian winter. We have to keep the front door open to even out the temperature.
We are going to start roughing it soon and get ourselves booked into one of the many little bamboo bungalows on offer. Get down with the backpacker crew.
Off to check out Chaweng a bit later. A bit more geared towards tourism apparently, but this whole island seems like one big Butlins to me. Everything is geared towards the tourist crowd. There is go-carting down the road, shooting and golf ranges, and apparently this is one of the least touristy parts of the island. After Bangkok though it is quite nice to see a few familiar/similar faces. It is quite apparent that we are not the only crackers that forgot the sun cream. You can spot a Brit from a thousand yards. Its like a box of swan vestas have sprouted legs and jumped on the nearest scooter. Chang beer being 6.4% and 80p for a huge bottle, combined with cheap bike rental and it is no surprise that there are more road accidents here than anywhere else in the country. Still, when in Rome...
