I got to rainbow beach, which is where i would be getting the ferry from to fraser, about 1pm; this was after spending the night in hervey bay trying to sleep on a bench in the bus station. We stopped off in hervey bay because the buses change so i had to spend the night before the next bus to rainbow beach left at 10am, but me being me, i didnt think about doing the sensible thing and booking a bed. So when i phoned up all hostels in hervey bay and found they were all fully booked, i was kind of ******! So i decided to try and sleep on a bench in the station....i didnt sleep.
So i got the bus to rainbow beach that morning, checked into the hostel and went straight to bed. After a couple of hours kip i woke up had a shower and went to the briefing thingy we all had to do, and also to find out which group i would be with. My group was...ok, mostly girls, but all taken and around 29. After the brief i went to watch tv and saw the footy highlights; i got talking to a irish bloke about footy, he bought me a pint, and well the rest is history.
Got up nice and early the next morning to get ready for the trip. We had to pack all the things onto the 4wd and have another safety briefing before we could set off. Once this was all done, we headed to the harbour where we got the ferry to fraser island. As soon as we got there we got stuck in the sand so we spent 1/2 hour trying to dig it out..very hard work. The first day we drove along the beach, getting stuck on the odd occasion, we werent going fast enough, because the girls were complaining of going too fast when we were going 40kmh! The conditions were really bad though so is was quite scary at some points.
We headed to lake mckenzie for our first sight. The track on the way was horrible, it was so bumpy and uneven, several times we nearly tipped the truck. There was one time where there was a truck from the opposite direction so the bloke who was driving stopped and reversed up the side of the track, the truck was nearly horizontal, we all braced ourselves as we all though it was going to tip over! I was s***ting myself! The truck driver who worked for a tour company got out and had a huge go at the driver saying we were so close to tipping. So after that all the girls were terrified throughout the whole journey! and didnt want johan the driver to drive anymore. We finally got to lake mckenzie which is a huge fresh water lake, it was so nice. Had a swim and some lunch, and left to go down the death track again! We survived the drive, and headed down the beach again to find camp.
We camped out on the edge of the beach, cooked a bbq and had a few drinks, no one, apart from me and seat wanted to drink so everyone ended up going to bed quite early. We were surrounded by dingoes at one point as they could smell the bbq. They're just like foxes, very shy so we werent worried.
The next morning, we had brecky and set off early along the beach again; stopping off at the shipwreck and ending up at indian head, a really nice view of the beach. We then walked along the other side of the beach and got to champagne pools, where we had a swim and sleep. Set off again at 2ish, finding camp around 4pm. We made some food, had a few drinks, same story as the first night really.
The last day we set off again to go to lake wabby. It was a long walk along a small track but i think it was worth it. I really nice lake which is a greeny colour, it had catfish and turtles swimming in it. As everyone started to leave, the driver johan noticed he didnt have the van keys!! He had put them on his flip flops on the sand dune!! So by the time we started sifting through the sand, they were long gone! So we had to walk back and call the mechanic to say we had lost the keys. He came in about 1 hr with a spare set, so we managed to make it back to the boat in time. It was a really good trip, but i jave to say i was a little dissapointed. I had heard so many good things about it, my hopes were too high. I still really enjoyed myself though....
We got back to the hostel at around 4pm, where we unpacked all the luggage, and took the van back. We got some food at the hostel, and went to bed early as i had to catch the bus again at 10am to go to noosa for my canoeing trip which, ill be honest, i was not looking forward too!....
