This morning we began heading toward Picton. It was interesting to see the effect of the low tide. Many large lagoons empty of water.
We stopped to buy fruit at a local roadside stand. The pears and apples are just being picked now. The Nashi pears are great. Unfortunately the kiwi fruit isn't ready for harvest for another 2 months.
We had lunch at the "Boat Shed" in Nelson, recommended by other travelers, for excellent seafood. We had Oysters, mussels, clams and whitebait fish. All very good!!
We arrived in Picton this afternoon and had time to check out this town this evening and do a little shopping. We really like this harbor town. It's quite small with a very quaint main street and town center. We will spend the day here tomorrow before we leave on the ferry to the north island.
Our camper van is getting 22.7 miles to the gallon and is about $6.00 per gallon for diesel. Gas is running about $8.31 per gal. All these are in NZ currency which is about .73 to the US dollar.
We just heard the news about the earthquake in Japan. It sounds like NZ is one of the countries on alert for possible tsunami. We will be listening closely on the current wave information.
