Today we took tour from Te Anau to Milford Sound. Fiordland is New Zealand's largest National Park. With high mountains and beautiful coastline. The tour took us on a 3 hour bus tour which stopped at some spectacular lakes and waterfalls. It snowed last night in the high elevations which made the mountains spectacular this morning. It's very early for snow. There was a little hike that took us to a Chasm
which was rushing and rushing turquoise boulder laden rivers. We went through Homer Tunnel which is about a mile long through the rock mountain.
We then took a 3 hour boat cruise at Milford Sound which was beautiful with lots of waterfalls and saw fur seals swimming and basking in the sun. The boat cruised in close to most of the waterfalls and went under one of them. We were prepared with raincoats and everyone got very wet. They said that by going under the falls and getting wet you would take 10 years off your age. We thought we should run through a few more times!! We also went down in an underwater observatory that took us down 80 feet to view fish and coral.
We had cool weather in the upper 60's but beautiful and sunny. They said we were lucky because it rains at Milford Sound 220 days of the year as it is a rainforest. It's interesting that the tour guides in AU and NZ don't consider global warming as a concern, in fact we had a couple who speak very negatively about it as a created myth.
We had high expectations for the day and were not disappointed.
