So it's February, that means it's my birthday soon and it's the start of Black History Month. I've always followed Black History Month on BET (Black Entertainment Television) when I was living on Aruba. It's nice to experience all of the surrounding activities being held this month, in real life. I get to discuss about different black history related topics in my African-American literature class. For instance, we last week we had a discussion about a new dance craze called "The Harlem Shake" that is popular right now. The producer of the song is a caucasian male who claims to have invented the dance, even though the dance and its name originated in the early 00's by a hip hop group. The students in my class (mostly African American), had a heated discussion of the fact that a white male could take credit for something that African Americans invented and how that's been happening for ages now.
A German friend of mine and I were also asked by our professor how we experience being black in Europe and if the issues dealt with in class are known to us or if we've also experienced racism over in Europe.
I also met up with my hostfamily at their home where we had dinner with all of the international kids. I met some people from Colombia, Uzbekistan and Ghana. I had a great conversation with the two students from Colombia and since my girlfriend is Colombian as well, we bonded and exchanged contact information to keep in touch.
