After breakfast this morning I took a trip to the concierge desk to look into hiring a tandem and booking a bamboo raft ride along the Yulong river.
Just a few minutes later we were set to go. We've got a tandem and a guide for the day and are due to meet in the lobby at 11.
We met Lei, as planned and got on to our pink tandem and were off through the main street and on to country lanes winding our way through the countryside to Changlong Harbour on The River Yulong.
Karron, (as is her normal way) chose to drive from the back seat! :)
Down the country lanes on the way to the River we saw individual properties that must be owned by farmers as well as a few 'out of town' residences. None of them are 'affluent' looking buildings. I'm also pretty sure I saw a tombstone and tomb in the corner of an allotment we rode past which was quite a surprise.
When we arrived at the river, once again I was amazed to see just how many bamboo rafts there are waiting for tourists. This is a huge operation, so much so that traders have set up stalls nearby. The now very familiar calls of 'Hello' ringing in the air, (which are getting ever easier to ignore).
10 minutes later were on the raft, only to be stopped within 5 minutes by a lady on another raft offering drinks at 20 yuan. Fortunately, I'd read about the etiquette of these trips in order to keep the raftsman onside and I bought him a beer. A couple of minutes later and I was having a go of the raft!
It took us nearly 2 hours to get down the river. There were lots of laughs along the way and all in all we had a great time. I know Karron has written about this so I'll let her provide the detail.
