On Tuesday we went to the Nambung National Park to see the Pinnacles Desert, thousands of limestone columns. We were amazed that there were so many, they went on as far as you can see. No one really knows how they were formed. One theory is that they are the remains of an ancient forest, similar to the petrified forest in Cape Nelson. Boxing day was spent relaxingat the caravan park and eating all the food we had in the fridge before we left on Sunday. It felt strange to be 'back on the road' we had got used to the luxury of a warm shower and a kitchen. Before we left Fremantle we stopped to see the Round House, which we hadn't had time to see before. It is the first permanent building in Western Australia and was used as a gaol. On Monday we took a ferry over to Rottnest Island. So called because a Dutch explorer mistook the islands Quokkas for large rats. A Quokka is a marsupial and there are approximatley 10,000 on the island. They are nocturnal creatures but we did manage to spot a few. We arrived in Fremantle in the morning and spent the day getting our bearings and organising the week ahead. On Saturday we got very confused with the public transport, but eventually managed to get to Perth. Our first stop was the information centre, where we were taken on an orientation walk by a very friendly volunteer.
