On Monday we took a ferry over to Rottnest Island. So called because a Dutch explorer mistook the islands Quokkas for large rats. A Quokka is a marsupial and there are approximatley 10,000 on the island. They are nocturnal creatures but we did manage to spot a few. They look a bit strange, like a large rat with a kangaroo tail and they eat leaves and foliage.
We took a bus tour of the island, which was very informative and took us all the way around. Then we went for a coffe and a cake at a cafe. The island is very beautiful with many reefs, coves and secluded beaches.
We were supposed to catch the 4pm ferry back to Fremantle but there wasn't enough room on the ferry, so we had to wait until 5.30pm. What a shame! They did offer us a complimentary tea or coffee, but we had just had one so we went and sat on the beach until the later ferry. However, there was no bus to meet us because of the delay so we had to speak to the Captain who organised for us to be driven back to the campsite.
