Arrived on our long night train from Jhansi to Varanasi (both slept like babies) and it was already sweltering! We took a rickshaw through the city then the guy hopped out and guided us through the narrow alley ways (naturally filled with cows, dogs, motorbikes, etc) to our hotel. We checked in and literally sat in our room under the fan till about 3.30 when we decided to brave the heat and go for a walk down the Ghats.
It is beautiful here, full of colour and character. Bison and boys bathing in the river together, multi-coloured boats dotted all along the ghats and many a game of cricket being played on the steps. We had a lovely walk all the way down and up the Ghats, Tom scurrying from cows (as they tend to head butt him) and me hiding from cricket balls as i just don't like them.
Varanasi is HOT! 43 degrees HOT! We slept with wet towels as blankets in our fan room.. made for a couple of uncomfortable nights but was worth it.
We got up at 5.15am one morning to watch the sunrise by boat. We floated along for 2 hours and took in Varanasi from the water. We went past the burning ghats (where they cremate people on open fires by the river side) which was a bit gruesome, but interesting to see. Further up the river hundred of men and boys were swimming and many swam out to our boat to shake our hands. Was a lovely little trip.
For our last night/day we checked in to a hotel with a pool and literally sat in it all day! Water is amazing!
India has been a wild trip and we can't really believe it's over. However all is not over yet... on to Nepal!
