Hi ,
Well I had a little less trouble today with the GPS and only went a few miles out of my way!!
I spent some hours in Salisbury and yes yet another fabulous Cathedral ( only 13C one in the UK) but with a copy of the Magna Carta to make it more impressive! Now am north of there in a very old pub and am walking to Stonehenge tmw AM!!!
Cool eh!
Nottingham now, 1 week later!
Gee I must have been having fun, a week has gone by!
I walked to Stonehenge which was impressive tho much smaller in area than I expected. There was only a rope separating us so was quite good. An audio guide was provided so an explanation was provided about the stones.
I walked back on a National Trust path which went thru cereal fields, took twice as long.
I drove north to more stones that nearly circle a whole village.
The next day I continued west to Exeter ,staying at the Uni on beautiful grounds. I had intended to walk some of the South Coast Path but was over driving so stayed put. I did 3 free tours of the city including a cruise on the canal, and yes there was a fabulous Cathedral to see! I saw in the Deans private garden on a tour , was lovely.
Dad became very sick about now and there were some very worrying days with many phone calls( he has improved again!! )
I then went to Bath via Glastonbury(ruins of an Abbey, great Tower on top of a local hill, shops full
of crystals, incense, hippy clothes etc) then Wells (Cathedral , perhaps the best one)
I got to Bath later than I'd expected but did a dash thru the Cathedral -pretty routine by now- the park, covered bridge, the Roman circular houses etc, all nice but hard to photograph.
Then on to Stratford on Avon via a few Cotswalds villages- no parking of course!
I then spent 2 days with a friend from 30 yrs ago!
We went to Warwick Castle, interesting but not worth the 21 Pounds entry!!!
Today I have come to Nottingham to stay with a cousin of Adrian's.
We drove miles tonight to walk the spoiled pooch on a forestry site that was a coal mine! Interesting!
Monday I am off to the Lake District for a week.
I am not going to Scotland now, to far - 1500 kms round trip to go to Culloden !
Tho the GPS and I aren't arguing as much since I got help on how to programme it , it is stressful on these very busy roads. Today it was raining and the car was fogged up ( no
air-con) and water was being dumped on the car from trucks! Scary!
So will sit in the Lake District- or hopefully walk some of the tracks if it doesn't rain all week as predicted!
10 days later.
Well I spent 8 days in the Lake District, staying very centrally at Bowness-in-Wndermere on the lake.
I had mostly good weather luckily.
The National Park does guided walks every day led by Voluntary Rangers and I did 4 of them which were all great.
They were all in different areas of the Lake District so I saw lots of it.
One day I drove north to Carlisle then out to Hadrians Wall and saw 3 forts and walked on or along the wall for miles,
On the last day I climbed up the 2nd highest Mt in England with a Dutch couple I met on the way.
We were given some bad advice and ended up descending all the way down the valley and then back up around ridge! I still have sore legs!!!!
I then drove half way back to London to stay with another cousin for the night and then back into London yesterday.
No problems really.
So thankgoodness the car has gone.
I have spent nearly 2 days seeing more of London, lots of parks and walking along the river.
Also went to the Tate Britain art gallery, and the War Cabinet Rooms mainly about Churchill.
Tomorrow I am off to Hungary to start a one month trip through Eastern Europe with the travel company Intrepid. The company will be welcome.
Dad continues to be well which is fabulous news. He is 80 yrs old next week. !!!!
Hope all is well.
Will let you know how Europe is when I get wifi again
Carol.
