This past week i have been in Gunung Mulu National park in Sarawak, Borneo! Being a doco freak I had high expectations from the raving reviews from SIR david Attenborough himself... and I was absolutely blown away by not only the sheer isolation but the vastness of the glorious jungle!! Flying in from Miri, the view was spectacular... miles of green dense jungle with a miandering river flowing below!
I stayed in the dorm room (40Rm each night incl. breaky). It was a huge room full of single beds! A great way to meet people and share stories of whats the best things to do around Mulu.
During th week i met some cool people and we hung out the whol week together with nightly trips to open (the 3 for 10RM beer shop), or 'next door' (the bar that opens starts at 9pm and closes at 12)... where we drank tiger, the infamous kingway and tuak (the local rice wine!)....midnight highlights included a treehouse party for the 'exclusive kids' with penuts, beer and music with fireflies buzzing around for light! That was thanks to Gloria (LA) who planned this event for at least a few days.. and pulled it off! yeow! Another night we headed 'next door' for a night of drinking games - leading to the construction of THE 'tiger' tower! And maybe the coolest night of all was the night we jammed at the bus stop until 3am thanks to Aye (a local bar tender) and Rune (a Danish music teacher).. A week to remember!
enough about drinking and socialising! I was there to do some exploring! The Activities i did:
Racer cave (intermediate adventure caving)... entering a cave with helmets and head torches, squeezing through tiny holes, climbing up and down rocks... WOW! never been adventure caving before... something i definately wanna keep doing!
The river valley walk! haha! This is the infamous Vallywalk story that will be passed on to future Valleywalkers for years to come :)....
It begins with the group... Me, Richard and Anna (an aussie/russian couple i fell in love with) and 3 Brissy girls that had just got back from climbing mout kinabalu! We all invisaged a casual day strolling through deer cave through to the garden of eden, a nice swim and lunch at a waterfall then finishing off with lang cave! SO off we set with Eugine (our fearless guide)... in through the breathtaking deer cave, off the track down into the cave river, through a narrow boldour pass, back into the rive (neck high) and out the the gorgeous garden of eden... next up the hill (leach city) to the aterfall where we begin eating our well deserved nasi gorang... and as it happens the sky open up and it starts pouring down with rain! Eugine looks slightly worried and very eager to head back so we stop eating and head back to deer cave! the 3 aussie girls were a lot slower than us due to their 'kinabalu' legs. Once i left the narrow boulder chamber (the girls still inside) we heard an enourmous roar; an sheet of water has just overed the exit from the cavern we were just in in which teh girls were still inside! Eugine runs in and yells 'Run!!! or we are all gonna die'!! haha.. i laugh now but at the time we were so scared! the girls got out of teh cavern and we ordered to keep running.. next stop was crossing the raging river... in which one of the brissy girls was a finger slip away from falling off the esge into uncharted blackness!!! she emerged teary and shocked as we all were! what a day! what an experience! this tory got passed around the camp (amoung the guests and guides) I PERSONALLY LOVED IT! adventure baby! haha
Another day a group of aussies plus me richard and anna hired a boat and went for a ride 1hr down the river where we were dropped off up this little gully... it was gorgeous... untouched, prisine jungle with cystal clear water... up the river we walked... up and over water falls, swimming as we went.. stopping off for lunch (which we brought from caffeteria back at camp) until we reach a huge waterfall! such a beautiful afternoon! great company!
I could keep going on and on about the amazing jungles, diverse wildlife and midnight ruckus's.. but hopefully my pictures can say a few more words!
Just got back to Miri... catching up with some aussies for a seafood dinner tonight! Im here for 3 nights... keen for a relax.. laundry and a decent drink!
