We paid up for an amazing experience - however if was 4 hours on a coach, 3 hours on a boat and another 4 hours on a coach leaving me feeling prettty sick (though i started the day feeling a bit queasy anyway).
Complaints now aside - Milford Sound is just stunning!
We stopped off at Te Anau on the way (pronounced Tee Anoo) which had a big lake and mountains in the background. However on arriving to the national park that surrounds milford (its a world heritage site) we saw plenty of mountains.
People either see the sound (which is basically a fiord) on sunny days (you get stunning blue skies and green mountains and beautiful water) or rainy days (you get masses of water leading to waterfalls everywhere and still beautiful, if not greyish views). Its been raining for a while so we were expecting waterfalls and praying for visibility. There were a lot of clouds on our way which was a bit worrying however when we got to the sound the visibility was great and its just a spectacular sight. We had a buffet lunch and got some lovely photos. We also went to an underwater observatory which was 10m underwater.
On our way back, our luck with the weather continued and the sun shined giving us the most stunning views. We've really had such good luck with weather so far (as anna says 'touch wood'). The bus journey was awful though and we literally got home at like 8pm. However it was pretty cool that we got to watch The Hangover on the bus on the way back. Not bad at all!

kevin Hooper You need to brush up on your Maori. Te Anau is pronounced Tea R Now. Milford Sound is spectacular isn't it. Looks like you mised all the rain as it is absolutely flooded there now. Lucky with the weather alright (touch wood). Enjoy the last few days in our little country and tell all those pasty poms to come and see us. I mean where the bloody hell are you??
fardon haha touch wood! very important! wicked you got to see it on a sunny day, was well cloudy when we went!!
