Kaikoura is a lovely little beach township. Our hostel was so lovely, i would say one of my favourites so far! It had a really nice chill out sofa area and the kitchen had lots of free food. I had free breakfast and dinner! The bedrooms were kind of gypsyish and had cave like bunkbeds with curtains.
We used our day in kaikoura to do the "20 min" walk up to the peninsula. Along the coast its a really beautiful walk and we got to see seals at the tip. However the walk itself was about an hour and a half in crazy winds! We ended up taking shortcuts along crazy beaches and gardens and even tried to hitchike the end bit.
It was really worth it because we got to see so many seals at the end! You can get really close to them too, theyre so lazy and cute! We met a nice australian couple who gave us a lift halfway and we took a different way back. This turned out to be yet another amazing scenic route and with the clouds clearing we remembered kaikoura is by the mountains! We could see the whole town from where we were, it was a pretty good view of all views! On our way down we found some funky passionfruits which were really good, however made our way to a cafe for some proper lunch.
It was a shame we didnt get to do any dolphin swimming or whale watching as those are the must-dos in kaikoura... I guess my dream of seeing a whale will have to wait for another day...
Other than that, kaikoura is an amazing place, the albatros hostel is really lovely and we would all definately come back - but maybe on a less windy day!
