Had to wake up nice and early yet again because we were meant to all meet up at 7.30 and be checked out by then. One of the hostel guys asked if I would swap groups I was with and thought yeah why not because the german couple were boring and the rest of the guys already knew eachother so I was a bit of an outside so I thought it would be a good chance to meet more people.
I got a free beer just for changing groups, which I drank straight away, and would you believe it, 9 Irish people, 8 girls, 1 boy and they all knew eachother. They were nice enough people and were friendly and chatty but I felt even more of an outsider. To be honest most people from my 35 odd people in the group had already known some of the people there so that was pretty annoying, they should have split everyone up I would have said.
So my group were in the instructors car because it was the biggest vehicle too but It was a tight squeeze in there. We got our sleeping bags (10 dollars) and insurance sorted incase we crash (10 dollars again" then were given a cool box for the alcohol, we all had goon so there was about 6 bags of it in there. We had a checklist for food. Such as loads of bread, beef, chicken, rice etc so we had enough food to use over the days and they gave us a guide to what we should eat over the tour. First day beef sandwich (yes I ate) steak and mashed potato for tea, next day the same for dinner but chicken stir fry for tea and fajita wraps with cheese for the dinner on the last day, also came in very handy one of the girls was a chef so I never cooked.
After the food was checked we had to check around the vehicle to see if there was any dents and stuff before we got in just incase the company blames us after and then we got ready to go. We met our instructor called Danny who looked cool as anything. He had massive dreadlock rasta hair, pair of lush White sunglasses, always walking around barefoot in shorts and a shirt and had great stories to tell and had a lot of wit.
We set off from the hostel and got to the ferry, literally takes 5 minutes to get over the island it's that close but as soon as we got off we were on the beach so we headed along it, at first it was really cool because looking at one side you could see the waves about 20 metres away and the other side this scenery of Fraser island but after a little bit it was getting tedious and was thinking would this be it?
First stop was a place called eurong, it was sort of like a little holiday resort area with a hotel and stuff but it also had a convenience store so if we wanted any snacks or alcohol we could go there, we had our dinner there then left the truck with all the food so we could go to lake Mckenzie.
The track to and from the lake was the best offroad part of the tour, because the lake was in the middle of the forest, and it actually is not connected to any lakes or streams at all, the water is actually all from rainfall so when you go for a swim in it you can drink the water if you like. But the off road driving was really fun, bouncing all over the place especially if your sitting in the back, but by the end my arse was hurting, wasn't sure if it was off surfing the day before or if I made it worse but it was definitely worth it.
We walked down to the lake and it looked spot on. The sand was a White shade similar to Whitehaven but not as good but the lake itself was beautiful, so clear too and was surrounded by trees and green. Had a walk in the water, was quite cool so I didn't go all the way in.
After lake Mckenzie we picked the food up then headed to the campsite.
On the way back somebody spotted some whales in the ocean so we all got out the cars to take a look. It was a mother and baby whale with the mother teaching how to jump up in the water, I'm not sure why it was teaching it that but it was great when they both did it at the same time or one after the other.
When we arrived we were shown the tent area, think there was two rows of 10 tents for our area and 3 for a tent so it would fit us all. We got given a mat and was told that is all you can leave in the tent, not even your sleeping bag during the day because of dingoes.
Dingoes are basically wild dogs and if we are caught feeding them we can get fined like 300 dollars on the spot, this is because they scavenge for food and if given food will keep coming back and since they are wild they will still pose a threat, we got told that if you wanted to go to the toilet, Which was the other side of camp, you had a to have a dingo buddy to go with you and also take a dingo stick with you if you want to scare it away.
But in the past few months they have been trying to set up a perimeter round the camp so the dingoes can't get in after the "justin incident".
Justin was a german guy who after a heavy night of drinking goon decided to go to the toilet at like 3am but walked 2 kilometres the wrong was from camp, with a bag of goon and bag of crisps and a steak stain on his shirt. He fell asleep on the floor and woke up with a few curious dingoes nibbling on him, he got scared and climbed a tree but because he was so drunk he fell out the tree and passed out, also broke his arm, but it scared the dingoes away so at least he lived to tell the story.
But yeah if you leave your sleeping bag in the tent apparently the dingoes can pick up the food scent from you and your hands and clothes or whatever and come to the tent and chew/rip it open. I didn't realise how serious it was about dingoes until I actually got on the island.
A cool addition to the camp was a dance hut, basically a little round hut with a couple wooden chairs hanging round the edge where someone can put on an iPod and link it to the speakers so people can put on there own music, it's where you ended up at the night after a few drinks and was good crack actually.
While people were starting to make their diners I think somebody left some food hanging around because I was getting something from my bag in the van and when I jumped out there was a dingo right in front of me, looked just like a normal dog which is weird but at first I got a shock but remembered to stand my ground so it would go away but it went in the direction of camp and I'm sure somebody said it nicked some bread.
During my tea a girl passing me some steak dropped a bit of the steak sauce on my shorts and since I hadn't started drinking yet I got changed since I heard the justin story and how they can get into tents. Smart thinking.
Two litres of goon and a bit of bopping around the tent for a while and I was done for the night.
