My surf lesson was at 9.30 so I got to the shop for pick up, there was a middle aged woman and a guy with two kids also having a lesson and we were all given a wet suit. We got driven to the end of the beach and because it curls round it meant the waves were not as rough so it was a lot easier than if we were getting the wind and waves.
We were each allocated a surfing board, and he ran through the main points by demonstrating and making us pracice on the ground first. It helped that some of the terms he used and the was you position yourself helps because I use to skateboard so I had a vague idea of how it would work.
You start by lying on the board waiting for a wave to come then when it's near you gain momentum by swimming with your hands and as soon as the wave is under you, you bring your back leg up then try to stand and have your hands out and have both legs balanced in the middle of the board, if you lean too far back, forward or sideways or if your not standing in the middle then you will fall off.
What the instructor did to start us off was hold one persons board at a time, they would climb on then and when the wave was near he would push them then shout get up so they knew when to try and stand on the board and if you got it right you would be riding the wave. Pretty sweet ey!
After a few goes I started to get the hang of it and when your riding the wave it feels really cool but you don't really enjoy it until after since your concentrating so much trying to balance but you can travel a fair distance when you catch a wave.
The better we were getting the deeper into the water he would take us so the waves were bigger and for some reason I was struggling again, with the bigger waves you need better balance and because you go quicker then it's a lot harder.
I started falling off sideways and landing on my knees which are now still bruised, one time I even fell big toe first which absolutely killed and my foot is still swolen like 5 days later and it hurts when I try moving it too much. Sometimes you couldn't balance on the board and the front would sink it the water then you fell in face first then get a wave crashing over your head or worse the ankle support which has a rope thing attached to the board so you don't lose it would get stuck under the board so when you try to stand your stuck and the waves tip you over so I got a lot of water in my face a fair bit.
We stopped for a break an hour before the end and my knees and toe were hurting a lot so I was in two minds about going back in. But I thought I probably won't try this again and I paid for it so why not! But after a few more goes i started getting it again and it was great! But when you finish the wave you have to jump off your board and it's not often you get a clean jump and one time I fell off and I lost my balance and landed on my arse and it bloody hurt so I gave up about 10 minutes earlier than everyone else.
When we were taking our wetsuits off on the beach for the first time I saw some dolphins, they were swimming around not far from where we were surfing and it looked like they were jumped through the waves, almost like they were copying off what we were doing.
A few hours later we had the Fraser island briefing, it started off with a government video which the guy even said not to take seriously and we didn't because it was pretty stupid. There was stuff like don't put your camp up and sleep on the beach incase you get ran over, don't give dingos any food or else you will die and don't go over the speed limit on the beaches or the cops will catch you for speeding which sounds funny but they are actually on the island!
We got put in our groups, my group was a half Irish, half English guy called eddie who was also gay, his half sister Paige who was Irish, two Dutch guys and a german couple who were so boring they just talked to themselves in german and would never leave eachothers side.
I got asked from one of the Dutch guys if I wanted to go on a bring your own drink sunset cruise and free BBQ with the other Dutch and Irish brother and sister and thought why not, be a good idea to get to know them, even if im paying to see the sunset again.
The cruise was pretty bog standard and not an awful lot of people, but it was still alright, was a weird feeling getting drunk on a boat again only two days after finishing whitsundays. When we stopped to see the sun start to set, there was loads of these cool jellyfish floating past the boat and I pointed it out to everyone and this guy leaned over and actually managed to pull one out, he says it's all fine long as you don't touch the tentacles but I still wouldn't go for it.
After the cruise we went back for the free BBQ, was steak so couldn't go wrong then I went back to my room and cracked on with a few of the roommates one called Daniel from Sweden who I would see in Fraser.
