Woke up at 7.30am with a nasty goon hangover, but it helped that we had plenty of cornflakes toast and jam combined with fresh air to perk me up a bit. After cleaning up the camp it was time to head of but first Danny said that everyone who hasn't had a chance to drive yet will now get the chance so I managed to swap cars.
We Headed off to cathedral beaches to drop lunch off then went to champagne pools. The only shame about the day was that the weather wasn't so good, very windy on the beaches and spitting rain at times.
We arrived at champagne pools which is right at the top end of the island, it was also very windy. You had to take a little walk to get round the otheside of a hill to get to the pools and on a sunny day it would have been better to see and I would imagine more people would have gone in the water but it was pretty cold.
The rock formation made it out so there was a small collection of pools that after a few steps went quite deep, so peoples heads were just poking out the water, with the waves from the ocean splashing into the rocks and some of the white foamy water overflowing into the pool, hence the name champagne pools, was a really nice place but we didn't stay for too long.
Next was a small drive to indian head just up from champagne pools, this was the most northernly point of the 182km long island and it was up a high hill and by time you get to the top you could hardly stand it was so windy so we had to sit down and look over where on some days you can see whales. Also it's a great view point to see the long beaches at either side.
After indian head it was my turn to drive. We were going to drive back to cathedrals for dinner but it was still a 30 minute drive so it was all good.
Using sandals to drive isn't really an option they're useless so I went barefoot, the handbrake didn't work too well either Which made things interesting but it was a proper good laugh, it's harder to get the bite and so when your in the lower gears your revving most the time but after you just cruise along the beaches, the formation changes all the time due to sand moving around from the tides and stuff so my ride was pretty easy, obviously a few little drops in patches but it was the best driving fast through them to bounce everyone around in the back. Going into the cathedrals place was a little off road which was great crack everyone bouncing around the car, I was laughing my head off as I was trying to steer, push on the accelerator while also being thrown about. Great experience!
After dinner since the weather wasn't great we didn't stop for too long at the next 3 stops.
The first was pinnacles, it was a weird rock formation of like orange and yellow in a rocky pointed shape totally different to any of the other rocks and formations on the beach. It was pretty cool but nothing special.
Next was the shipwreck called the mahena, back in the early 1900's mahena was the second biggest ship only missing out by the titanic, it was built in Scotland. After it was finished being used, the japanese tried to tow it from Sydney to Japan, just before the entered the second world war I think, but a cyclone hit and the ships were seperated, and danny said they probably would have used the materials from that ship to bomb pearl harbour which was interesting.
Now the ship is firmly rooted to the beach, only a quarter of the ship is visible while the rest is submerged. But it was still pretty big, couldnt go inside the ship because it's unstable but you could stand next to it.
The last stop was Eli creek, it was a lush little river next to the beach, on a better weather day would have been even more lush but it was still cool. There was a guy with his motorbike driving through it from one side to the other then a girl in a bikini sat on the bike and he did the same, we all prayed they would get stuck but unfortunately not.
By this time it was half 3 so Danny said let head straight back to camp and get on the goon and people can get showers since the hot water is limited and we would probably be first to arrive. I never showered on the trip, the bathroom was manky anyway so I got straight on the goon with the Irish guy who everyone called fire because it rhymes with wire but thats still a weird name for an irishman.
Someone left a bit of jam on the table and I rolled my arm in it without realising at first, since I'd been on the goon I threw caution to the wind and kept it on even if it could have attracted dingoes but it didn't and I was cold anyhow.
It got to about 7 and we were about 3 goon bags in and it was time for drinking games. 1st was f@ck the dealer where fire got destroyed playing. Next was a girl who showed everyone how to play on the bus, it's know everywhere! By this time fire was asleep on the table and his girlfriend katrina woke him so he tried to sit upright but almost fell off his chair backwards falling into people, was hilarious.
Next we played a game called hi jack which I learnt on the whitsundays. Went down well and by now most the goon was gone, we went into the tent to bop about, I hung out with a girl and boy from my room in frasers and another girl who I met yet again for like the 5th time, first met her in mission beach, small world ey.
Went to bed about 2.30 I was falling asleep in the dance hut so I thought I better call it a day.
