Hey guys
Well, I am not going to lie to you, life in Bundy is dull. To give you an insight into how painstakingly boring my life is right now, here are my most current events:
Two days ago I found a bright ginger hair attached to my head and got so excited I proceeded to photograph it and tell the next 15 people I bumped into.
Yesterday we were rained off the field and sent home at 9am. I sat in the hostel and watched Sin City, Ghost Rider and Constantine. Two of which I have already previously seen.
Today I had to do a number two on the farm - we don't have the luxury of toilets - and my bum got bitten by midges.
We finished planting the tomatoes weeks ago and fortunately the farmer has taken a shine to three of us girls out of the original 6 and kept us on to do the aptly named shaking n' baking. We are required to walk up and down the rows of tomato vines in pairs, one half the pair snips at the wires holding the tomatoes up and the other partner removes the wire and disposes of it into bucket they are carrying. Both partners then grab the long wire on each side of the vine, pull them apart and shake the dead plants down to the ground until they start seeing double and physically cannot shake anymore. We do this for 6 hours a day and get covered in illuminous green s*** that is sprayed on the plants to increase the ripening process.
I don't want to sound ungrateful, really I don't. I mean we were chuffed at first to think that Nigel our farmer, had recognised the effort we put into our work by giving us more to do. We even put our lives on the line one day when he asked us to work on Easter Sunday. Naturally we turned up with a hangover having joined in with the fancy dress festivities at the hostel the night before (I was a nun), we ended up drinking all of our water and felt severely dehydrated. The moral of the story, bring more water to work.
Nigel even got us staking for two days last week, a real man's job. We sat on the back of a tractor using a hydraulic machine to push stakes into the ground. How cool is that?! But we were totally deflated and appaulled last week when we spotted a bunch of lads doing exactly the same job as us. We questioned Nigel, wanted to know if they were quicker or doing a better job. He shrugged his shoulders and said 'yeah they are quicker, but you're better to look at'. So there you go, the only 3 girls on the farm and we thought we were employed for our hard work!!!
Unsurprisingly, I have had several unbelievable and eventful nights out here. That's the amazing thing about goon, it doesn't matter where or when, you are guaranteed an extraordinary time in one way or another! The Saturday before last for example, a full moon. And if you believe in astrology you will know that people go doo lally when there is a full moon. The evening started well, a bbq at the hostel and happy hour. Spirits were high. I went to get ready for my night out in Central when the girls I worked with dragged me outside in secret. They had managed to scrounge a joint from someone, my first in Australia. We had such a giggle, especially when Orlene, who has never touched the stuff in her life before, asked to borrow my lipgloss but instead smothered her lips in concealer!
After this episode, we headed to Central, the best bar in town (and probably one of the worst in world!), they have some really good live bands and everyone goes crazy, because it's the one night of the week they can! When the night was over, we got to mingle with the band because Chris, the guy in my room is a drummer and wanted to have a go on the drums. After this, we went back to the hostel and drank some goon. No one had a lighter so we spent several minutes testing various ways of lighting a cigarette. I can confirm that a microwave definitely does not work but a revolving toaster can work if you squish the cigarette small enough and don't mind burning your hands a little.
When it started to get light, we went to the park and decided to go fishing down by the river. Just in case you wondered, yes, I was the first to jump into the river. On the way back, we bumped into a middle aged couple who thought we were hilarious and invited us onto the boat they owned. We stayed there for a few hours exploring their boat and jumping off the side of it before we headed home. Once back at Cellblock at 11am, everone else had already had their sleep, woken up and were sitting in the pool taking advantage of the free beer being given out due to the lines being cleaned. Obviously, I wanted to join in the fun and as my clothes were already wet, I jumped straight in. I didn't go to bed until 3pm that day. I went for a walk to get some food, sat down on a bench to eat it and fell asleep. I was wearing only a bikini and a towel. I don't blame myself one bit, I blame the goon.
Last Saturday evening was yet another fancy dress party. This time in celebration of Tony, our work Manager's birthday. Everyone had to dress up as something beginning with 'T'. I was duped into dressing up as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle along with 3 other girls. We couldn't find green body paint, so we settled for the next best thing, poster paint. We couldn't get it completely off for days and looked mouldy. I'll will put up the pictures when I get more time.
I have a couple more stories from work today. During our smoko, I looked down at my leg to discover a couple of grasshoppers shagging on my knee. Not normally one to feel scared, I panicked and screamed, setting off the other girls screaming and jumping around like crazy.
On the way home we rescued a tiny little kitten, it was adorable. Luckily we go to the RSPCA just before closing time and saved the little blighter's life. Feral cats are treated like pests here and had we have left it on the farm, it would've been killed like it's 3 siblings :).
Leaving beloved Bundaberg on Sunday. Cannot wait. Setting off in my friend Shell's campervan. Just us 3 girls, me, Nicki and Shell. Happy Days.
Ciao for now!
