I am not happy.
We got up early to meet our group for the Fraser Island tour. The sky was overcast but I was holding out hope for sunshine, after all we've had enough rain over the last two weeks. However about two minutes after we got in the cars it started to rain!
We went to Woolworths to buy some food for the trip, as well as a bottleshop for some alcohol. After a fifteen minute drive we got onto the barge to take us to Fraser Island (in the rain).
Once on the island, Vicky drove the 4x4 for a bit to the main area 'Central Station'. We had a rainforest walk (in the rain) before having some lunch. Some guy from another tour operator was trying to get us to move from the sheltered area so his people could have it to themselves, but we didn't move! Just because his people paid a silly amount of money for their trip, doesn't mean we should go without food. We had baguettes and apples for lunch.
After lunch Hannah drove, and we went to a freshwater lake called Lake Mackenzie. Luckily the rain held out for 20 minutes or so whilst we swam in the crystal clear waters and took some pictures. After the lake, it was my turn to drive (soaking wet, in my bikini). It was really fun! I've never driven a big car before, let alone offroad in the rain - it was bumpy and wet but I was really proud of myself. Maybe mum and dad will insure me on the Landrover now!
After that was another lake, which is stained yellowy brown by stuff from the plants, so it looks like a lake of wee. It is still drinkable but with the rain and grey sky I did not fancy swimming in it. The rain was absolutely relentless, and after the lake and a half an hour drive to our campsite, it was still raining. In my soaking wet clothes in the pouring rain, I was starting to get really annoyed. I am not an outdoorsy person, and I don't like camping, however I thought I'd be okay in the warm sunny weather. We put some tarp up over a table, but it was still getting wet. We also saw a possum, a big spider and a scorpion and I kept getting bitten by bugs. Whilst trying to kill a scorpion, Syd (our guide) slipped off the table and nearly fell on the open flame from the gas stove! I just can't comprehend why this is supposed to be enjoyable! I'm lying in the tent now, on a rock hard floor, wishing I was at home, or at least in our dry hostel. If it rains tomorrow I am definitely not going to be happy.
Sorry for the downer of an entry, the people we are with are really nice and so is the island, but the rain and camping are not!
