We had a long lie in til midday which was nice. At midday we got up to get ready. This annoying Chinese guy in our room who stays out all night and gets in at 9am got annoyed with us for turning the light on, but I just said 'it's midday, we're getting ready and we'll turn it off when we leave'. That's assertive for me as I'm normally completely non-confrontational!
By the time we'd got ready, and been online to book our Greyhound to Canberra and accommodation in Melbourne, it was gone 2pm.
We started to walk towards the harbour, but stopped at McDonalds for a bit to use the free wifi so I could upload all the blog entries I was behind on.
Eventually we made it to the opera house where we had some photos on the steps. We then went to some markets in the Rocks. They were so good, full of people selling their photographs, paintings, clothes, childrens books and other crafty type things. There were so many gifts I could have bought but I didn't buy anything because it was all very expensive.
After the markets we wandered around the botanical gardens for a little while before heading back to the opera house to have a look inside. It is such a let down. It looks like a 60s prison inside! It needs a massive refurbishment and they need to change the glass from old school dated brown to clear. It definitely looks better from a distance.
It was gone 6pm by this time and we were hungry so we headed back to the hostel. On the way back we stopped in a cheap clothes shop where I bought a long sleeved t-shirt thing for the cooler weather in Melbourne and NZ, it was only £6.
Back at the hostel I had rice with Coles homebrand stir fry sauce (equivalent of Tesco Value), tinned sweet chilli chicken and sweetcorn. Sounds gross but it was actually not bad.
We then just spent the evening chilling out, reading and packing really. I went to sleep at around 11.30pm. The annoying Chinese guy came in the room about four times during the night slamming the door each time and faffing about loudly. At about 2.30am he turned the light on! Hannah asked him to turn it off, and he said he had to pack because he was leaving tomorrow, so I said 'we had to pack too but we did it earlier - you can't just turn the light on in the middle of the night!' He was so annoying. Dorms are normally fine but occasionally you get people like him. He also hoiks up and spits really loudly and makes general snotty sounds. Pretty glad to be rid of him!
Canberra next!
