After the whale trip was cancelled yesterday I got rather homesick, well very homesick really. I tried to distract myself by walking up to the Lion's Head, but got scared by the many refugees camped out at each set of traffic lights: ashamedly I replied 'sorry I haven't got any' to a chap who asked for the time, as I was so prepared for him to ask for money. If I remember rightly, they're predominantly Zimbabwean refugees who most likely are well educated but unable to get jobs here because of their status. Shame on me indeed.
I was all prepared for another day of pottering around Cape Town and walking up the never ending Kloof Nek Weg, but the hostel assistant knocked on my door at 8am asking if I was still up for the tour to Hermanus as there had been a last minute booking. I ended up waiting in the rain for the van, which of course didn't pick me up from the same place as the other tours, making me even wetter. The tour guides were entertaining though, one was from Cape Town, and the other a self-proclaimed Rhodesian from Bulawayo. The couple who had booked last minute were from Sydney in South Africa for his work: I didn't pay attention to which work.
It took us two hours to get to Hermanus, by which time the rain and clouds had cleared to make way for glorious sunshine. The noon viewing boat was just about to leave but let us on: at around £50 each I'm not surprised they decided to!
The clouds were back and the sea rough, very rough. A little lady sat opposite me tried to contain her sickness, luckily her daughter directed her over the side before she projected it anywhere near me. At one point we were set to turn around and return as the seas were so rough and we were unable to see any whales at all, but a whale slithered past us so we lost any chance of a refund. I didn't see much of the whales, but it was pretty impressive to think we were out there with some pretty big beasts. The Humpback did his lob tail for the cameras, but my little camera wasn't quite good enough to catch it: all about the experience though.
After the slightly disappointing whale watching we headed to the second part of the tour to a brewery, although technically it was the third as the restaurant which should have been second was closed. Brilliant.
There were eight beers, one of which I couldn't drink. Not bad. The tour guides said my brothers would be proud of me holding my drink - my red cheeks soon made an appearance as the alcohol rushed to my head though.
We passed some baboons on the roadside on the way back to Cape Town and stopped to take photos, they were on the Australian man's side, so he used my camera for me - dangling it outside the window as he did, which I must say did not impress me.
To top off my day I spilt hot chocolate all over my bed sheets - lucky it was my last night.
