My first organised tour as a solo traveller took place today: it was half an hour late, which may not have been the best start, but it did enable me to see a homeless man search the bins for his breakfast before bidding me a good morning as I clutched my bag. Nothing like a bit of humble pie to start the day.
My guide collected me from the gate of the Zebra Crossing hostel and I took my place amongst the ten other tourists in the van as we drove toward Hout Bay. We took the ferry across to Seal Island, a rough crossing by most standards, particularly Japanese by the looks of the little old ladies struggling to keep their high-tech cameras steady.
The wheels on the bus went round and round again as we made our way further down to Simon's Town for a look at Boulders Beach. The penguins put on a cute show as their new feather poked through and they wandered over to us to have a look at the strange contraptions we were pointing at them. Leaving the penguins behind we put on our helmets and mounted the bikes set out for us. The helmet was so cracked that I'm not sure it would have done much good if I had fallen or been hit, but I wore it nonetheless. After an initial struggle to come to terms with my first bit of exercise in over six weeks I managed to pedal my way to Cape Point first! My picture was the first to be taken, and a good job too as the hordes soon arrived to steal any further photo opportunities.
No chance of a rest though, next up was a hike across to the lighthouse. A hike that ruined any chance of an elegant photo at the top! My bedraggled hair looks delightful in my photo album. As we rushed down to the bus after our photo we saw the rest of the ten stepping off the cable car, lazy beggars.
A sleep on the way home followed by a hot shower and then bread with noodles for dinner topped off a rather lovely day!
