I thought the fresh air up on Table Mountain would help me sleep, but it positively knocked me out! I went for a cat nap at 5 and didn't wake up until 6 this morning. Blimey. It was a good job I did wake up as I hadn't set any alarm, but the van was late to pick up for the wine tour so no problem there.
There were 6 of us on the tour, all girls. We started drinking at 10am, needless to say after 8 wines per estate we were ready for our lunch. The Belgian girl and I went for the traditional Bobotie - delicious! With its sultanas and curry flavour it reminded me of Dad's curry - a nice taste of home. We helped our stomachs at little at the third estate with a bit of cheese tasting, but the wine still affected us. The wines were starting to make me shudder by this point, so I had to opt for the dessert wines in an attempt to slow down. I even tried an alcohol-free wine that had Rooibos tea in it, very nice indeed, and a welcome break from 10% wine.
The last estate let us choose a bottle to taste, I chose one called Golden Harvest and, not that I'm conceited, everybody said it was their favourite! In the third estate a middle-aged cheeky beggar said 'too much sun' to me and pointed at my cheeks - I corrected him and said it was due to my genes, actually!
The drives to the different estates weren't lacking in entertainment either, the driver had a music collection that included Meatloaf, Simply Red, and Westlife - no wonder we all fell asleep on the ride home. We tasted wines in Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl.
As we all discussed what we were doing in Cape Town I was quite surprised at how in awe the other girls (and driver!) were of my trip - gave me a little glow. Or maybe it was the wine.
