I was shocked out of a really deep sleep by my alarm this morning, for the first time since I left home, I have not managed to wake up ten minutes before my alarm, which was set for 3:30am. I got up and dressed and packed away the last of my stuff into my day pack.
George and I had a quick breakfast of a bit of bread with marmalade and then made avocado and tomato sandwiches to go, for breakfast at a reasonable time, like 8am. We loaded ourselves into the cab, George in the passenger's seat and me in the back on the bed where the driver usually sleeps. We opened the gate and drove out into the night.
I managed to lay back down and have a bit of a snooze for a bit on the bumpy road out of Arusha, thank god for all those nights spent on moving trains. I basically carried on like that for most of the day, snoozing, sitting up watching the road, changing positions because I was uncomfortable, chatting with George. We pretty much made one stop for the toilet, George and Mugo by the side of the road (lucky men!) I was just about to go and find a bush, when a security official flagged me down and pointed to a toilet on the other side of the road. The toilet was literally a hole in the ground, surrounded by an open grass fence. It was slightly better than a bush I supposed.
I walked back across the road and yelled to the officials behind the truck, Asante! We headed off for another five hours of driving on bumpy roads, we arrived on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam at about 3:30pm after almost ten hours of straight driving, we dropped George off in the city as he had something to do in there. Mugo and I then drove to the campsite, which took about an hour and a half in the truck. George actually arrived the same time as I did. I had a crew room, a banda (type of hut on stilts) I grabbed my stuff, had a bit of a drink at the bar and then George and I ran into the ocean for a swim.
I'd forgotten how warm the waters were in the Indian Ocean off Dar es Salaam, last time I had been here I hadn't liked it because it had been 49 degrees and sticky, now it was rather pleasant as it was about 20 degrees and there was a cool breeze.
I had a shower after my swim, in another outdoor shower, with no roof and trees overhanging, one of my favourite things in Africa, it was even a hot shower! Wonders will never cease.
George and I then had dinner and I had a rum and coke at the bar, after we went back to the staff house with Mel, who I had just met and watched a movie. I went to bed in my Banda at about 10:30pm.
