We left our hotel in Stone Town quite early to go off and see the sights. The first stop was a church built on the site of the old slave markets. It was so nice to see some architecture after a month of trees grass and rocks. The church is dedicated to David Livingstone who pioneered the stopping of the slave trade in East Africa. After we visited the church we went down into the old slave holding chambers which was a real eye opened and really sobering. The chambers we so tiny, it was hard to believe they had once held up to 75 people, with no toilet in the searing heat.
After the slave markets, we went to the food market and spice bazaar.Something which I can safely say I did not enjoy in the slightest.First we went through the fish markets, I've never smelt anything so foul in all my life, then I hurried through the meet market, just in time to see some guy hacking into a cows skull with a hatchet.Gruesome.I made it to the spice area and spent most of my time there.
We then got back on the bus and were driven out to a spice plantation, where we got to guess which spices were which. They have something here called a lipstick plant which the ladies use to make their lips red.I had fun with that, although it came out more of an orange colour. After that we went and had lunch at a locals house and the food was amazing. We then went back to the spice plantation and watched a man climb all the way to the top of a coconut tree.
After being led around for about six hours that day, we drove an hour to the northern beaches. We checked into our bungalows and then I went to check out this so called paradise. When I stepped out onto the beach it literally tool my breath away and I felt like my heart was going to jump out of my chest, it was so beautiful.I've never seen water that colour before, almost like a fluro turquoise.
I stared at the beach for a bit before going to get a henna tattoo and then swam for the rest of the afternoon. Some of us then went out to dinner at a posh restaurant, which was bloody awful. The power was off again, so another sleepless night in the heat.
