This has been a most random day.
Firstly we got on the bus at 10am as planned and were taken to a meditation centre, as planned. When we got to the meditation centre it was halfway up a small mountain and we had to walk up to it. It was in some of the most spectacular scenery I had ever seen and had actually been built in the shape of an elephant, even though there are no elephants in Mongolia.
All the way up to the centre there were Buddhist proverbs on signs along the road and then 108 steps leading up to the entrance. There was also a chain bridge which Alan jumped on when Katie and Gen our two 18 years olds walked over. We got to the top and the view was amazing, we got to go into the centre which was very colourful and quite cold inside, which was nice, because it was very hot outside. When I came out we had about an hours free time while our guides prepared lunch.
At one point the little old care taker grabbed me and took me to show me his little house out the back and gave me a brochure on the centre, he then planted a big wet kiss on me cheek! Cheeky devil!
I sat outside admiring the view with my group and watched Tom, climb up to the Buddhist paintings on the cliff because someone had dared him to. He actually managed to get almost right up to the writing, all we could make out of him was the red dot that was his red shirt.
We climbed down from the centre and sat in the shade and ate our lunch. While the guides were cleaning up, a wooly cow came over and nudged herself into the food, the driver promptly shooed her away. Katie also found and old cattle skull in the bushes and we both pulled out teeth as souvenirs.
After lunch we headed back to the Ger camp for horse riding, I arrived and the horses were already tied up and they were some of the smallest horses I had ever seen, which instantly worried me. I got everyone onto their horses and got onto mine. One of the horsemen insisted on leading mine around and I had no idea why. I soon found out. A plastic bag blew past and my horse nearly had a heart attack and almost bucked me off. Stupid Critter. I had obviously gotten the jittery one. I carried on for about an hour of our ride and then insisted on getting off and walking, a few of the group also walked for a while as my horse wasn't the only jittery one. Ally's horse actually sat down while she was on it, twice!
I fell quite far behind as I was walking and it was a long trek, I didn't really care though the scenery was beautiful and it was a lovely day for a hike. I caught up to the group, who had stopped for a break to visit a local Ger and its inhabitants. The whole group was crammed into the Ger and was eating dried cows milk which was not that nice. They also had a pet cat which was keeping Katie entertained.
As our camp was now not far, I decided to get back on the horse, so to speak and was given the horse Alan had been riding, which was much calmer, thank god. I got back to the camp with the group, I think most of us were glad the ride was over.
I made a time for dinner and went off for a bit of a rest and to do some writing. After dinner I sat around having a few beers with Sarah, Tom and Moy for a bit, before going back to Moy and Alans Ger for a few more. Katie, Gen and Ally joined us after a while also. There was a group of high school kids staying at the camp now and they were having their formal there. Katie noticed that a disco had been set up in the restaurant, so Katie, Gen, Moy and I decided we would go crash the party.
While we were dancing I think I had a revelation that dancing to LMFAO, Sexy and I know it, in the middle of the Mongolian countryside, having crashed a school formal, was possibly the most random moment of my life and that's a pretty big call. Whatever it was, it was a spectacular return to form for me and it reminded me a bit of my old Fez days and taking my passengers out partying in Turkey.
When the music got a bit beyond us, we made our tent the party tent but as the stove was lit and it was way to hot, we just all ended up sitting in the doorway, Moy and I firing Simpsons and Futurama quotes at each other, which the girls really didn't get. I eventually moved into the Ger and went and sat on my bed. There was a comment that I looked like A Bogan Cleopatra! That was also Moy who is from Blacktown…small world. We eventually went off to bed, we are going back to Ulaanbaatar tomorrow.
