We have a nice reasonable start of 8am for breakfast this morning, which I constantly have to monitor now we are in Mongolia. The lady who is cooking it b*****s off half way through and leaves me to do everything. The guy on reception comes up and takes over, obviously apologising that I had to pick up the slack. I go back to having my breakfast and then return to my room to grab my stuff and load it onto the bus. Most people have opted to take a day pack out to the camp and leave their big bags behind in the luggage room.
We get into the bus and head out to the camp, we make a short stop at the supermarket, basically so Andrea can pick up cigarettes as you cannot buy these in town because you are always within 500 meters of a school or university. I buy a few beers and snacks to keep me going and then we get on our way again.
Our first stop is along the side of the road, where some men have vultures, Steppe Eagles and two of the woolliest camels I have ever seen, one dark brown and the other gold. Unlike last week, everyone piles off the bus to have photos taken holding the giant birds and patting the camels, they all seem to really appreciate the stop, I even got to try something new…I'd never held a giant Asian vulture before. I named him Igor.
Otgon stopped in the national park next to a herd of yaks and we all got out and took photos, I didn't have any photos of yaks so I took some too. We have Bob the Canadian on this tour, who takes pictures of anything and everything, Bob we around behind the yaks in an attempt to get batter pictures and all the yaks started to move. Bob Maxwell, yak herder I yelled and people laughed.
We stopped at one hundred monks cave where the monks hid from the communists and I climbed up to have a look and sat on a rock enjoying the amazing scenery and also at a point where I could grab people if they slipped. We visited turtle rock and I bought a chess set and an amazing antique looking compass from a nearby lady in a Ger.
Our last stop was the Meditation centre, which I climbed all the way up to and enjoyed the view before herding everyone down and back onto the bus to get to the camp for lunch. I was surprised to see the view from the meditation centre, all the snow had melted! I was only here a week ago, and it's changed so rapidly.
We arrived at the camp to the usual three course lunch that leaves everyone needing a food coma. I allocated the Gers and everyone went off hiking. I think this is the most active group I've had, I've never had everyone go off hiking. I tell them if they want to go hiking to let me know the general direction they are headed, as the place is a bit wild and so I know where to send the search party. I pull my blanket out on the grass and listen to where people are off to as I sun myself and eventually fall asleep right there on the ground. I wake up with a bit of a jump as Disturbed has just come on my ipod touch which I had been listening to and people are just starting to get back.
I got up for dinner and organise the horse riding and camel riding excursions for tomorrow, I am supposedly going for a two hour ride on a Bactrian camel tomorrow, so let's see how that goes. About half the group end up in my tent after dinner, which has been dubbed the party Ger (I don't mind) and Bob teaches us a new card game called frustration, which I think I've played before, but which is quite complicated. We put some music on, What a Beautiful Day comes on written about me by my ex-boyfriend who was in a band. No one knows what the song is, so I hesitantly explain. I am never going to live this down now am I?
