What can I say about Memphis? Well it's old, run down and has definately seen better days, but I love the place. Where else in the world do you see signs telling you that you can't bring your firearms into the shop?
During the day you get a very eerie feeling walking around the streets as it is so quiet and you hardly ever hear a sound or see anyone during the day.
I headed to the Sun Studios where Elvis first recorded which was also slightly weird as there was no no one there. Much smaller than I expected.
I then walked to the Lorraine Motel where Martin Luther king was assassinated. There is a reef which has been laid at the door of the room he was staying in when he was shot at the door. The Motel has now been turned into the National Civil Rights Museum
I decided to hit the town to see what Memphis has to offer. I headed to Beale Street and I wasn't disappointed. It was definately the best night out I've had since i've been travelling.
There was live music being played everywhere, rock n roll, blues, jazz country and everything in between in the bars and on the streets.
Beale street was crammed full with everyone drinking and partying on the street (and plenty of cowgirls!).
The best live act was a guy called Richard Johnston who was from Alabama. He was a proper backwards southerner wearing dungarees, long hair and playing two drums with his bare feet. His guitar was made from a broom stick, cigar box and parts from a washing machine. There is a reality being planned about him following him touring around the country.
My camera is pish at night but I'm sure you all know how to use google if you wanna see Beale street.
