Craig knocks on my door around 11am. I'm moving like a sloth. We look for breakfast and end up at the rusty keyhole. Breakfast baquette and mug of coffee on the way. The French influence being the staple start to my day. Back out on the bikes we head to Kep along the tarmac highway. Starts off fine but the road changes to a a small strip of tarmac along the middle, with the mopeds being shunted to the dusty borders. Kep is about 30km away and glad to see the large white horse monument that sits outside it. Eyes nipping from the dust and sun. The seaside town is packed with locals along the seaside front. We stop to get directions to the cave networks, leaving more confused than before.
We find old French ruins at the back of the town, an apocalyptic wasteland, another reminder of a past era. The cave system is miles away and already mid afternoon. We go another 15k out of town to find a pepper plantation which based on our luck with attractions is closed. Looking through the gates we see lots of pepper plants. Feeling the heat we head back a long the bumpy road.
Finding a place where locals are sitting we enjoy chicken rice for 2 dollar. Full we go to Rusty's and sit outside with a beer. Jon appears on his moped. He grabs some dinner whilst we tell him about a party at Bhodi guesthouse on the outskirts of town which we had been told about last night. Most of the workers and people who had found out would be there. Turned into a fantastic night of live bands following a modern hippy movement. The owner joins in on drums and turns out to be their last party before the place is sold. A cool crowd and we sit by the river. Music turns eventually to a funky jungle sound which goes on into the wee small hours. After many beers and jugs of Mekong whiskey we decide walking home would be the best cause of action. Stumbling through the dark, a starlit night and barking dogs to keep us company. One of the dogs decides to walk us back and we christen him Blacky. He certainly has better vision than the 3 of us. Took an age to eventually see the hostel but a fun end to a great night. I collapse on top of the mozzie net and sleep comes instantly.
