This morning I woke up around 10am and decided it was time to move on. I had had a few messages from Jess and Craig (from my trip in China) via Facebook saying that they were in Bali and that I should come and join them. I had looked at the cost of flights and as of this morning I have not yet decided whether I will go there yet, but I did now know that the flight was a lot cheaper going from Bangkok than flying from Cambodia.
I headed over to the reception desk at my hotel to find out if there was a bus out of Siem Reap to Bangkok so that I could then head off to my next destination.
The reception made a phone call for me and said that there was a bus out of Siem Reap over to Bangkok today, but it was at 10:30. I said that I will go which then gave me less than 30 minutes to get ready and pack up my bags. So I paid the grand total of $15 for my ticket and rushed back to my room to get ready. Guess what....for the first time ever on my trip something has turned up early!!!
At 10:20 I got a call from reception saying that my lift was here and I wasn't ready. I quickly stuffed my remaining clothes and things in to my big pack and went down to reception to check out. I was quite surprised to see that we had a taxi come and pick me up which then went on to pick up 3 other people from other hotels in the city. We were going to be taken to the Cambodia / Thailand border in the taxi and then once over the border in to Thailand we were to get on a bus to Bangkok. I am glad that we had this taxi which meant that we got to the border a lot quicker than a bus would have done.
I cleared the border with no problems, got my 15 day Thai visa (only 15 days as I came in overland. It would have been 30 days if I had flown in), and jumped on our bus to Bangkok. I arrived in Bangkok around 18:00 and first thing that I did was to leave my bags in a luggage store and then head round to a few hostels near Koh Sarn Road. The first couple were cheap, but quite crappy. I settled for a nicer room which cost me 400 Baht (about £8) with a double bed, en-suite and air-conditioning. I went and grabbed my bag and checked in.
After I was settled I headed over to a travel desk to see if I could get a flight to Bali and they told me that I would first have to pay to get a visa and also wait 3-4 days for it to come back. There was no way that I was going to wait in Bangkok for that long waiting for a visa so I ended up booking an overnight bus to Phuket for tomorrow. Quite random I know but it was heading in the right direction as I had to get to Singapore for a flight to Australia on the 15th August 2010.
For dinner I went back to a Pad Thai stall by the side of the road that I had found last time I was here and had Pad Thai with Chicken and 2 big spring rolls covered in sweet chilli sauce for 100 Baht (£2)...lovely, I would move here just for the food.
After my gourmet dinner sat on the kerb, I headed out for a drink or two. I went to one bar where I had been before and Christina will appreciate this photo and may be the only person who gets this, but I saw "Jesus" again (as we had named him last time we were here). It must have been over 2 months since I was last here and he was still out getting really drunk every night.
I moved on to another bar and while sitting there on my own, the waitress said that I should go and sit with the other English guy who was also sitting on his own, so I did. His name was Mark and was wearing a Liverpool football shirt...so stereotypical I know!
I got chatting with Mark and then realised that he knew that waitress that had sent me over as he was dating her and was sitting there waiting for her to finish her shift. We had another few drinks together and then when his girlfriend finished working the 3 of us headed to another bar which had a live band playing. We only just managed to find a table and 3 seats as it was so busy up here, I am not sure why as you will hear. The band was pretty terrible as they were singing all English songs with a very strong Thai accent. When Kings Of Leon started I had to record some for you all to appreciate their version of “Sex on Fire”.
