From our camp the previous night we drove 150k in 38 degrees to the coast through the most amazing landscape. We had imagined dry desert but because there have been recent heavy rains the whole area was covered with a very pale short pampas type grass which when blowing in the breeze just looked like low mist covering the ground.
We made our way 250k down the coast to Swakopmund along the most unusual coast wilderness in the world. Strong currents and swirling fog of the Atlantic sea have long been a hazard to shiping. There re several shipwrecks along the route together with an old disused diamond mine. It is basically a desert right up to the sea and is a very inhospitable place. There are several places to camp along the way but it is manly only avid fishermen who chose to stay there. By the time we reached Swakopmund the temperature had dropped to 17 degrees due to the swirling mist that blows over the town.
