We made our way to Etosha National Park where the central feature is a large salt water pan which covers 23% of the park. Driving up to the lake gives the impression of driving towards the sea it is that large. The salt water attracts local wildlife which requires salt in their diet.
The north camp at Namuton is based around an old German fort and includes not only camping but some very upmarket accommodation which is a lot cheaper than other places like the Serengeti. There are countless game drives and waterholes at which the animals gather and each of the three rest camps have a flootlit waterhole where guests gather at night to watch the animals come to drink. Sitting around the waterhole in total silence we watched a giraffe walking alon the edge of the hole and a lion which did not come to drink but must have stayed in the vicinity as we would hear it roraring all night. The only downside to sitting around the waterholes at dusk is that the 'mozzies' have a field day and you get eaten alive. Although we had on long sleeves, long trousers and were covered in repellant we could still feel them biting through our clothes!!
We spent a night at each of the 3 camps after driving around watching the animals. The last camp was very impressive and the pool and restaurant area were excellent. The toilet and showers were so modern they could have asily been in a 5 star hotel.
