Day 31. Slept in and shaped up for a lazy day. Drove 30km out to the Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge), traditional home of the Jawoyn people. Lunch on the deck at the visitor's centre, we decided not to do a gorge cruise as already done on a previous visit to Katherine. Back in town for a walk down the main street, intrigued by the number of brothers and sisters milling about. Out to the old Springvale Homestead built by ex-Overland Telegraph linesman Alfred Giles in 1879 who tried unsuccessfully to run sheep in the NT but successfully started the cattle industry. Beautiful parklands and tree-lined main street, people obviously very proud of their town, the 4th largest in NT. Lazy afternoon, reading and a swim in the pool. The Katherine River viewed from the low-level crossing is particularly beautiful. Dinner at the Big Fig Cafe under the giant Fig Tree in our Big 4. One of the best caravan parks we have stayed in. Comfy 27 degrees today and overnight a cool 6 degrees. Heard Canberra is rather chilly!
